Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has stated that he has the authority to remove President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, according to 3News.
He claimed that while the law gives Parliament the power to remove the president, it does not give the president the same authority to dismiss the Speaker of Parliament.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin expressed concern during a post-budget discussion held in Ho, Volta Region, over the weekend, that Parliament authorizes budgets that benefit the administration more than the legislature and the judiciary.
He said that this was their fault and demanded that steps be done to rectify the problem.
"All of the legislation we've enacted this year have been laws to favor the executive, even in the terminology we use, this is self-inflicted; it's not a defect in the constitution, it's a deficiency in Parliament itself," he said. He stated, "We must remedy it."
He also reminded Members of Parliament of their legal powers, emphasizing that they must be able to stand on their own two feet and not be swayed by the executive's whims and caprices. He highlighted the house's authority to remove the president from office as an example.
Let me reiterate that the 8th Parliament is well-positioned not to be forced into playing second fiddle to the executive branch.
His Excellency the President can be removed by Parliament, but His Excellency the President cannot be removed by Parliament.
His Excellency cannot remove me as Speaker, but I can remove him [the president] through Parliament." He did add, though, that despite having such powers, he will not use them.
