Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the First Lady of Ghana, attended the 9th Summit of the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM) in Abuja, Nigeria, on Monday, November 22, 2021.
Mrs. Aisha Buhari, First Lady of Nigeria and acting President of the AFLPM, is hosting the summit, which aims to develop ways to reduce the impact of violent conflicts on people, particularly women and children, on the continent.
The AFLPM was founded as a result of the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing, China in September 1995.
This was a platform when the African First Ladies Peace Mission was established by the wives of African Heads of State/Presidents who came together as peace ambassadors during the conference.
The Peace Mission was born out of a desire to help the helpless in Africa's crisis situations, particularly women, who are known to be the most vulnerable and bear the brunt of violent conflict, as they are often defenseless, left with orphans, enslaved in war zones, and often at the mercy of rampaging rebels and insurgents.
Finally, these women are left to care for the injured and deal with the consequent hardship.
The AFLPM coalition represents a vital stakeholder that can help to mitigate violent conflicts and reduce their detrimental impact on African people, particularly women and children.
Following that, the AFLPM has provided assistance to women and children, as well as made significant efforts to create peace on the continent via advocating for the rights and protection of women, children, and the girl child from violence.
Mrs. Buhari, who began receiving some of her colleagues on Sunday, November 21, ahead of the Summit, expressed satisfaction at the visit.
Madam Maria de Fátima Vila Nova of Sao Tome and Principe, Madam Antoinette Sassou Nguesso of Congo Brazzaville, and Madam Fatima Maada Bio of Sierra Leone are among the first ladies to attend the gathering.
Other first ladies from Liberia, Niger, and Namibia are in attendance, as delegates from Zimbabwe and Cote d'Ivoire.
The AFLPM's purpose, according to Ms. Aliyu Abdullahi, the Nigerian first lady's Special Assistant on Media, is to promote peace and conflict settlement across Africa.
