Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana's Vice President, has praised Muslim and Christian leaders for their significant contributions to religious tolerance and peace in the country.

Religious leaders have played an important role in preserving a tolerant and peaceful Ghanaian culture;By Bawumia.

Dr. Bawumia said the country's global credentials as a religious tolerant and peaceful nation have been made possible by the understanding and camaraderie between leaders of the two major religions in the country, speaking to thousands of Muslims on Saturday at the 2021 National Maulid – the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad, S.A.W.

"All of us, including Muslim and Christian leaders, have worked together to increase religious tolerance in the country, which has resulted in the peace we continue to enjoy."

"When the National Chief Imam paid a surprise visit to a church a few years ago, the BBC reported it, the renowned global broadcaster was not only telling the world about Sheikh Sharubutu's uniqueness, but also about the beauty of our country; how religious tolerance reigns in Ghana, and how peaceful our country is." This occurred during a period when there were religious upheavals all throughout the world.

"I note and appreciate the efforts made to the National Chief Imam and another Islamic clergy across the country by numerous Christian leaders," he stated.

The Vice President urged a continuance of such concerted efforts to maintain the country's peace and create a suitable environment for the administration to continue with the nation's development.

"Everyone, regardless of political or religious background, should be concerned about and responsible for maintaining the peace we enjoy in our communities and country." There will be no peace without tolerance. "There would be no progress without peace," Dr. Bawumia urged.

"We must jealously guard this," he continued, "because without peace, our government would not have been able to achieve so much in the last five years in terms of infrastructure development, inclusive policies to alleviate Ghanaians' suffering, and massive investment in education, among other things."

According to him, the administration has always placed a high priority on maintaining and enhancing the country's peace.

As a result, he asserted that "Ghana's ranking as the most peaceful country in West Africa and the second most peaceful country on the African continent for 2021 by the Global Peace Index is no accident."
