The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori Atta, has assured Ghanaians, especially the younger generation, that the 1.75 percent E-levy will create over 11 million jobs for them by 2022.
Ken Ofori-Atta gave the assurance during a speech to thousands of young people at the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region's Springboard Youth Dialogue on the theme.
“Building a Sustainable Entrepreneurial Nation; Opportunities for Ghana’s Youth” said, “2.4million are in formal employment whilst the remaining 15 million are split between informal and underemployment.”
According to him, about 58 percent of the country's population, or about 18 million Ghanaians, are between the ages of 15 and 59.
"Our task as a government is to ensure that we extend opportunities to the youth," he said. The consequences of having eleven million people with no clear path depend, without a doubt, on tailored support to provide skills and funding to our young people so that they can pursue their ambition to be free."
"How do we, as a country, move into the entrepreneurial stage so that we can contribute to national development?" How can we reduce our debt while also creating jobs?
"How do we care for our infrastructure and roads so that we can open up the country and build good Internet systems that will provide opportunities for everyone?" Why are we so averse to the future? We have nothing to be concerned about. "Have we as a nation grasped the significance of the times we are living in, and are we willing to make sacrifices to advance to a new level?" he inquired.
"When someone tells you not to go there," he says, "tell them, give me an alternative for these 11 million people who are at home and not working."
